There have been some great players to wear Twins uniforms over their existence. There have been power hitters, base stealers and fantastic defensive players. There have been silver sluggers, MVPs, batting champions, gold gloves winners and two World Series Championships celebrated in Minnesota. One thing has always held true, is the Legacy in center field. I haven't been around since the beginning of the Twins coming to Minnesota. In fact I never got to watch Kirby control the outfield and I was really young when Torii took over.
The Twins have a legacy in centerfield is just really special, I think it is incredible how one player can completely change the way the game is played and for the Twins, that is Kirby Puckett. Kirby was Torii's rolemodel and he based a lot of his game off of how Kirby played the game. The home run robbing catches are some of the greatest catches in history. Torii isn't afraid of any walls and is always willing to sacrifice his body.
Next came Denard Span, he also looked up to Kirby and refers to Torii as his "big brother" since he always helps him out. Span is known for his speed and fantastic defense. He is a great lead off hitter and the legacy will continue and we have already seen with Ben Revere. Arguably one the fastest people in the major leagues. Ben Revere is not afraid of anything, he robs home runs, takes away doubles, dives for the wall, lays out to take away a hit. Ben also makes a lot of so called outs into infield singles and proceeds to steal second and possible third. He can also do a somersault inbetween second and third and still make it to third safely. hehe.
The legacy in center field is something that will always be special to me, I won't forget the All-Star game when Torii robbed Barry Bonds of the home run. I won't forget when Span got three triples in a game. I won't forget when Ben Revere had his back to the field and took the home run back. and even if I wasn't alive, I will never forget watching the replays of Kirby's famous "...and we will see you tomorrow night" home run. This is the Legacy of Center Field In Minnesota.
